I finally got the Beta keys in, and man this set is looking GOOD! The colors are going to be shifting due to the darkest keys being tiny chalkboards, and I think that's for the best. Scroll down for more images!
Newest Updates
The colors are going to be shifting a bit, the darkest color pictures (GSF) turned the keys into mini chalkboards, and the white (WJF) was too blue. We also added in two additional space bars in 2.25 and 2.75 for added compatibility. Production has started, and should wrap up in a few weeks!
The Big Idea
GRADE is immediately recognizable. The concept is nothing new, enthusiasts have been putting together sets like this for years. Whether it's combining multiple vintage sets, or ordering low quality caps online: this concept has been done before. I however (like many), wanted to have my cake and eat it too. I wanted these colors, in a high quality plastic, in an amazing profile; and with those ideas in mind, GRADE was born.
Subtle & Timeless
Taking design cues from sets like Dolch, Industrial, and Granite; the concept of GRADE is to allow us to customize our boards, without over powering our eyes (or completely slaying our wallets), while still allowing for minimal individuality. Similar colorways makeup some of the highest up-voted posts on /r/mechanicalkeyboards, and WASD themselves have dozens of custom sets posted on their Facebook. The mods in GRADE all feature classic icon legends, and the subtle transition of colors have been carefully selected to match nearly any workstation setup.
Compatibility for the Masses
Choosing which layouts to support was the single hardest process to go through. I had originally decided to focus on the majority of keyboards and keep it all in one kit; instead of branching into many kits for many different boards. Initially, this was to ensure MOQ's would be hit for non-standard layouts and ISO boards. However, being a keyset of the month, Signature Plastics will manufacture the keys prior to the sale. This means we can break the sets out without worrying about reaching any MOQ's. I have confirmed, all kits will be available when the set launches.
PBT vs ABS
Most enthusiasts are aware of the differences in PBT plastic vs ABS plastic. To recap: PBT doesn't wear down as fast, the molecular makeup makes it typically sound more "thocky" and less "clicky", and the texture will hold up much better over time. ABS tends to become shiny with use, while PBT does not. This provides a better typing experience. Admittedly, one draw back to having Signature Plastics manufacture GRADE is their inability to double-shoot PBT. Double shot keycaps are made of two "pieces", thus creating a legend that will never wear off. However, like other PBT sets, GRADE's legends will be applied via Dye Sublimation. In short, this process dyes the legends on a molecular level. So, while technically not quite as durable as double shot caps, in reality the legends will far outlast the board they are attached to. Why Featured Keyset?
The original plan was to run GRADE as a standard Group Buy: garner support, run a few interest checks, collect money somehow, wait months and months, sort the caps, ship the caps, etc etc etc... Anyone who has spent time in this hobby knows the drill. But the more I looked into it, the more I realized how many ways I could screw it all up (not counting how many ways someone else could screw it all up). After discussing the details with Signature Plastics, they generously offered to pick up GRADE as one of their Featured Keysets. This will result in the caps getting made sooner, getting shipped faster, and taking out the middle man. All good things as far as I am concerned. Escape
One of the biggest reasons keysets even exist in the first place is the feeling of individuality they bring. Having a photogenic board, or standing out, or comfortable typing experience, or just simply enjoying the aesthetics for yourself. It's all about tailoring your keyboard to your specific taste. During the design iterating process, I found myself getting lost in the monochromatic-ness of GRADE. So I opted to include 12 different Escape keys, giving GRADE a minimalistic beauty yet still allowing for individuality.
